If you haven’t seen it yet, the Pico Branch Library in Santa Monica is one of the greenest buildings in the city and is LEED Platinum Certified.
We had the pleasure of working with this establishment as we constructed its apple-green custom canopy which gives it a free-flowing, fresh, and inviting appearance that keeps it in tune with the city’s casual and friendly vibe. Aside from creating comfortable shade for its visitors, the undulating also serves the purpose of collecting rain water which is then used for the library’s toilets. The innovative design we used for this part of the library’s exterior allowed us to implement elements that serve more than one purpose. For example, the steel poles that hold up the canopy also provide evening lighting and bike racks for library patrons.
What we love most about this project is that it represents the changing culture of sustainability in Southern California. As more businesses and organizations become interested in learning how to upgrade their buildings in order to become more energy efficient, we learn how to be more creative in our design strategies so that we maintain elegance along the way.
